Welcome to University Wiki!

The idea

Generic University.
The concept behind University Wiki is similar to Wikipedia: to provide free access to information. Our objective is to build a collaborative project to provide prospective students with a free source of information on universities worldwide. University Wiki also aims to provides information for incoming freshmen and transfer students on information to get the most out of your college experience. However, we are not limiting the scope of our articles to just universities. University Wiki will also hold articles that pertain to terms that may be used in college admissions such as "early decision", attractions nearby to the college such as amusement parks, restaurants and clubs and student organizations such as clubs, fraternities and sororities. Because our project is similar to Wikipedia, we do not aim to replicate the information found there. The main focus of our articles is student life at the university and admissions.

Getting started

Anyone can contribute to University Wiki. Registration is not required to edit, however editing in this fashion will cause your IP address to be recorded publicly in the page's edit history. If you create an account, you can conceal your IP address and be provided with many other benefits. To begin contributing, start by entering the full name of the university into the search box on the left and click "Go." It is important that all articles are created under the full title of the university for consistency. If your university has a more common name or a nickname, you can create a redirect from these other names to the official name later. When the search results come up, if the article exists, click on the name to go to the article and you can start contributing by clicking the tab labeled "edit this page" on the top. But the more likely scenario is that an article on your university will not exist. Click on the "create this page" link which will bring up an editing window. The first thing you will want to do is paste a blank university infobox into the article and fill it out to the best of your knowledge. You do not need to fill out all of the fields. The usage of the infobox is fully documented on the template page. You can view an example of the usage of an infobox here. From there you can begin writing the article part. Even if you write just one sentence, you are still making a valuable contribution. You can go even further by adding a subpage for admissions at your university, and starting that page with the admissions infobox. We also have a discussion forum that you can find help or give help on.

You can find more information on University Wiki user groups on the user access levels page. In addition to the groups listed, we will also have unofficial groups that anyone can join such as the anti-spam task force, copyeditors, and translators.

You are encouraged to correct any problems on the site because you can control the content. Looking ahead

In the future we would like to translate our articles in different languages to help students thinking of studying abroad find out more information to help them make their decision. If you know a language, add the appropriate babel template to your userpage to aid the sysops in determining which languages to add next. We will not be internationalizing our articles until they have gone through many revisions. You are welcome to start articles about universities anywhere in the world, but if the university name is not in English, please start the article under the English translation of its name and specify the official name in the infobox.
